When we talk about cigarette crushing, we all have picture scenes from films such as the one in Grease, in which Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) stubs out her cigarette under her clog while Danny Zuko (John Travolta) looks on in astonishment, or the scene from Sin City, where Gail (Rosario Dawson) stubs out her cigarette under her pair of boot-sandals. Just as there is a fascination with women who smoke, there is an allure to the still-smouldering end of a cigarette, flattened, torn and crushed beneath the sole of a shoe in a sexy twist of the foot and ankle.
This illustration draws inspiration from all of this. The idea was not to show a cigarette crushed under the sole, but to suggest the gesture through the cigarette stubs – the paper torn open and the filter hanging out, the remaining tobacco spilling out like a trail of blood. And that cigarette, still smouldering under the threat of inevitable crushing.
